EUROPEAN UNION VISIT TO RUHENGERI HOSPITAL

On Monday, 23rd March, 2026, Ruhengeri Level Two Teaching Hospital (RL2TH) hosted a visit by the European Union Ambassadors to Rwanda Delegation, headed by HE. Belen CALVO UYARRA.

The aim of the visit was to learn more about key flagships of the European Union cooperation with Rwanda, more interested in the project of the new hospital construction in collaboration with the Government of France and other ongoing projects strengthening the health system in general.

The above delegation was composed of Ambassador of FRANCE, H.E Aurelie ROYET- GOUNIN, Ambassador of DANMARK, H.E Casper STANGER JENSEN, Ambassador of GERMANY, HE. Heike UTA DETTMANN, Ambassador of IRELAND, HE. Mags GAYNOR, Ambassador of The NETHERLANDS, HE. Joan WIEGMAN, Chargé d’Affaires of HUNGARY, Ms.Zsófia ANTAL, Chargé d’Affaires of LUXEMBURG, Ms. Charlotte HELMINGER, Chargé d’Affaires of POLAND, Mr. Grzegorz MORAWSKI, Head of Political Section of EU Delegation, Dr. Uwe WISSENBACH and the Head of Cooperation Section of EU Delegation, Mrs. Elise HADMAN.

At their arrival, they were welcomed by the Executive Secretary of Musanze District, Mr. Alex KANAYOGE, together with the Director General of the Hospital, Dr.MUHIRE Philbert, Security Organs and other Officials.

After a brief presentation on the hospital profile and challenges, discussions were held for more clarifications.

Before leaving the hospital, they visited different Departments (Maternity, ICU and IOSC Departments), both sides appreciated the impact of this joint work through the Cooperation between Europe and Rwanda.

Among the questions asked, during discussions, they wished to know how to Hospital overcome the challenges of the small number of Doctors and Nurses it has, what does the hospital benefit from the training conducted by AFD-EXPERTISE FRANCE, the impact of Isange One Stop Center…, and they were satisfied of the responses given.

She, HE. Belen CALVO UYARRA, expressed their appreciations in these words: “On behalf of Team Europe, thank you very much for the visit and for sharing your vision. Pleased to see the impact of our joint work as Team Europe and Team Rwanda. Turi kumwe!" 

Note that through this partnership, the construction of the new hospital will be started soon, in addition to the Technical Support in Critical Care already in place.
